This post was published almost a month ago, but I stumbled on it only last night. It made me feel proud.

Selfie

I'm not for hand-held selfies (I like 'proper' self-portraits, though), but, just like everyone else's, my face's changing as I get older; I'm at peace with it and I'm recording the process even when I lazy. Here is a little hand-held update then and yes, your features get slightly distorted because you can't stretch your arm enough to allow enough distance between your camera and yourself to avoid those distortions. In real life, your eyes (or brain, to be more precise) would make all the necessary adjustments for you, so you'd perceive objects as they are, but not a camera; it simply can't do that.

Three

"Perhaps the easiest way of making the town’s acquaintance is to ascertain how the people in it work, how they love, and how they die. In our little town (is this, one wonders, an effect of the climate?) all three are done on much the same lines, with the same feverish yet casual air. The truth is that everyone is bored, and devotes himself to cultivating habits."

This is the quote from the novel I read as a 16-year-old girl and it made such a powerful impression on me that I started analysing people, including myself, through this 'tricoloured lens'. It's never stopped. Different 'colours' were important at different stages of my life, but the one I've been focused on for the last few years is the first one. 

It might be that the quotation resonates with the values instilled in me by my family, but I find those who persistently try their best most interesting. They are the ones who won't suck up to anyone in authority to gain anyone's favour because they simply don't need it. They are focused and consistent. They know their value (without the need to be flashy) and realise that someone's inability to see it doesn't reduce it. 

I feel so privileged to be able to watch them. And, in this context, it's so wonderful to remember that people don't change; we just get more set in our ways as we age.

As you can see, she hasn't quit smoking yet (despite having tried countless times). No make-up, no fancy clothes and still looking stunning at 59. Her most important and most precious qualities, though, can't be seen in these photos.

The Picture of My Grandma on BBC

Yesterday, I mentioned that last Sunday I submitted two pictures to BBC. Below is the link to the second one, which has been published today.
The picture won't tell you this, but My Grandma was a lawyer and, for many years, worked as a Deputy Head of The Inland Revenue in the town where I grew up. This picture is about her vulnerability, defencelessness and, strangely enough, about her power.

My Brand New Photo on BBC Wales

I've been busy, so I didn't have the time (or kept forgetting) to submit my pictures for a while (with this tiny exception: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-26777198; image 4, but then I never took the time to post the link to it here).

Number 6 is by me and I think it looks better below (or in my previous post) than on BBC.
